WHOLE BODY TUNE-UP with Somatic exercises

Somatic exercises have proven so effective & popular with our Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays @ 10:30am  that we are now offering an evening class

 Somatic exercises are simple and performed slowly and mindfully with the breath.
These classes teach you techniques to achieve and maintain muscular balance in your body.
Each class will cover a series of exercises which, with practice, can be done in 10 - 15  minutes to keep the muscles of the torso balanced, flexible and strong. We will also address the shoulder girdle, pelvic girdle and legs. With awareness, your areas of weakness or imbalance will become apparent to you so you can do what needs to be done to feel and function better!

 This practice is beneficial for everybody, from high level athletes to those in chronic pain and recovering from injury and everybody in between. This neuro-muscular training series will undo imbalances due to postural habits (sitting, cycling, golfing, etc) injuries (over-use of one part of the body to accommodate the injured part) while building strength in muscles and improved range of motion in joints. These simple exercises are also excellent to support treatments such as chiropractic, massage, acupuncture etc.

H A N N A   S O M A T I C S

Hanna Somatics is a safe, gentle system of movements designed to unlock postural patterns as well as areas of muscular tension.

The movements were designed by Thomas Hanna, who was influenced by Moshe Feldenkrais, Alexander Technique, and others, as a system of self-care  which when practiced daily, keeps the body muscularly balanced.  It is a brilliant system which provides us with tools to help us to turn our awareness within & to recognize and correct imbalances as they arise and before they become entrenched.

Instead of stretching muscles, we 'reset'  muscle tension through gentle specific muscular engagement followed by slow deliberate release & relaxation. Rather than actively stretching, we look for a 'yawn-like" experience of the muscles lengthening and releasing. These newly released muscles are then used in an integrating movement for better overall co-ordination and function. 

The results are often dramatic resulting in increased flexibility, strength and improved posture.

Our intention is to teach you these movements so they become an integral part of your self-care routine.
We can work with you one-on-one or in a group class setting.

The Somatics movement explorations are an effective way to support other treatments such as massage, chiropractic, acupuncture etc so that when treatments are given to release tension you will know what to do to maintain that release. 

The movements are done mainly on the floor on a yoga mat (or thick cotton pad for those with particular discomfort or difficulty lying on the floor)
We will also do walking self-assessments to begin to recognize our own movement patterns. 

The beauty of Somatics is that it is a first person experience where you become attuned to what your experience within the body (and mind) is.
When we consult any health-care provider, they can only assess us from the third person point-of-view: from the outside.

Our bodies provide us with the information we need to maintain health if we learn to listen. 

 Somatic Yoga

 Somatic Yoga is a blend of Hatha Yoga, Hanna Somatic Education, breathing techniques, healing meditations & deep relaxation techniques.

Gentle easy movement sequences are used to warm up the body, unlock old patterns of holding stress and release pain. Simple accessible Hatha yoga postures are linked with the breath, healing visualizations and meditations plus deep relaxation techniques integrate body, breath and mind. The experience is deeply meaningful on a personal level.   The dramatic results include increased flexibility, enhanced strength, and improved posture. The results are cumulative with practice. You are left with an overall sense of peace and well being as well as increased flexibility, strength, improved posture and ability to 
breathe more deeply. 

Gentle Somatic Yoga was created by James Knight and heavily influenced by the work of Moshe Feldenkrais, Thomas Hanna, Eleanor Criswell, and Lawrence Gold. This practice is accessible and enjoyable for everyone, regardless of previous yoga experience or current physical condition.

Learn self care movement exercises for home practice​

One -on-one lessons will describe & address the three reflex patterns that, when they become ingrained as muscle memory, can result in stress (physical, mental & emotional), cause poor posture, muscle tension resistant to release and dysfunctional movement patterns.

Verbal cues & gentle hands-on guidance as necessary and simple pain-free movements are combined to help you reconnect with your internal awareness (interoception) and
 re-establish improved voluntary control of your muscles
to release your habituated patterns. 

 Hanna Somatic Education is a neuro-muscular re-education process that will give you the understanding 
to continue to benefit and HELP YOURSELF
when discomfort & pain arise
