  • I've never done Zumba before. Can beginners participate?
You're not the only one! Yes, Zumba is designed for both new participants and regular participants. You do not need dance or fitness experience to join a class. The class is designed as a "one size fits all." The routines and steps are simple enough that new participants can easily join while regular participants are challenged. And, of course, you're always welcome to modify the workout to suit your needs. You know your body best.
  • I'm not coordinated. Will I be able to follow in class?
This is probably the most commonly asked question. You bet you will. Dance or fitness experience is not required. Zumba is not about learning to dance or perfection. It's simply about moving and having fun. There is no right or wrong in class, and it is a very safe environment. That's why we call it a party! Remember, like anything new, there is a bit of a learning curve. Once you learn the basic steps, it will get easier and easier.
  • What should I wear and bring with me?
Dress in comfortable workout clothes, and wear runners with good support. If you own dance-fitness or jazz runners, those work well for class. However, they are not needed to do the class. If you like, you can bring a towel to wipe off sweat. Of course, don't forget to bring water!
  • What type of shoes should I wear?
Regular runners with good support work just fine for Zumba. If you own dance-fitness or jazz runners, those work very well because they allow you to slide a bit. An alternative to purchasing dance-fitness shoes is to put a small piece of duck tape on the ball of your foot and on your heel. Please do not wear slippers or any type of shoe that does not offer support. Although we are dancing, Zumba is also a fitness class so you require support for your feet. We also ask you wear runners that do not leave scuff marks on the floor.
  • Is Zumba actually a good workout?
Zumba, Zumba Toning & Zumba Gold are designed as cardiovascular workouts. Like any aerobic workout, you can choose how intense you would like to make the workout. Participants have burned anywhere from 400 to over 700 calories during the 1 hour class. Other benefits include keeping blood pressure normal, improving your heart's efficiency, decreasing body fat and helping improve body image and self-esteem.
  • Should I take Zumba or Zumba Gold?
Both programs are designed for any fitness level, any age and any experience level. The difference is Zumba Gold is designed to be a lower impact workout. Therefore, if you have injuries, are part of an older population, are pregnant or wish to keep your workout low impact, then Zumba Gold is probably best for you. But don't be fooled -- you'll still sweat and work hard in Zumba Gold. You can always try both classes and see which one you prefer. Our punch cards can be used for any classes at Breathing Space.
  • Can I hire you for an event?
We love to do events! We have done birthday parties, anniversaries, silent auctions and master classes. We're open to ideas! We change the format of the class to suit the event we are attending.
